Lives: Somerset West
I am a medical doctor currently specializing in sports and exercise medicine. The road that led me to become a sports physician started at a young age when my passion for exercise was ignited. I have a dream about changing people’s health through exercise. I want people to exercise for health and not purely for appearance. I believe in functional fitness above all else. During my work, I am confronted on a daily basis with ill health that can be prevented by moving your body. Disease and lack of fitness are closely related. I want to encourage people to get moving and help them get back to health. This platform could make my dream a reality. I will use this platform to encourage by setting an example and sharing valuable, credible medical knowledge. I want to showcase that fitness doesn’t only have one look. I believe fitness looks different for everyone. I feel strongly that everyone needs to embrace their uniqueness and not conform to traditional beauty or fitness standards. I want to stop the culture of restriction and comparison and start a culture where people make the best decisions for health and not purely for looks. I want to encourage people to love and nourish their bodies, and always strive to be the best versions of themselves, however different that may look. I am just your average girl with an above-average passion for health and fitness, and I hope to be able to ignite this same passion in people around me.

How does fitness fit into your lifestyle?
When I was a small girl running became a part of who I am. Back then I started running for my mom who at the time was terminally ill and couldn’t run due to ill health. She became my driving force, encouraging me and supporting me to reach my full athletic potential. Now I continue to run for her, and for all those who can’t due to health reasons. Today I run because it frees me from everything that is holding me back. It is a temporary diversion from life’s daily stresses. Running is my escape, my joy, something that drives me and relaxes me, something I can do to celebrate my health and condition my body. Through running, I get energy from spending time in nature and I get fulfillment by reaching my goals and mastering what I thought was impossible. I also enjoy other endurance sports like triathlon, mountain biking and adventure racing. I enjoy the challenge, pushing myself and being surprised at what my body is capable of. Being able to perform well requires dedication through training and persevering through tough times during a race. This helps to build mental toughness and grit, offering an added benefit above pure physical fitness. Fitness and health is being portrayed in my lifestyle on a daily basis. From the way I move my body to the food I eat. All aspects of me scream that I’m consistently working at achieving the best health possible for my body.
What are your personal fitness goals?
To build a strong body, mentally and physically. Giving my body the correct building blocks and fuel it needs to stay healthy and strong, to be able to sustain me for a long time. I aim to live an authentically and sustainably healthy lifestyle that won’t easily be lost. What I lack in talent, I make up for in hard work.I am driven in all aspects of my life, not just fitness. I regularly compete in endurance events and have multiple goals from a personal performance perspective. My main goal is to always do the best I can, never back down from a challenge and never stop believing in myself. Above all, I aim to enjoy the process with all its ups and downs.
