Twelve aspiring fitness models are one step closer to realising their dream of being a Fitness Magazine cover model and USN ambassador.
This year saw 146 entries received for the 2019 USN Face of Fitness cover model search competition. Entry requirements followed the same criteria as 2018, with a 1 minute video, physique and head photos along with a completed entry form required.
The deadline for entries was 31 August, which saw the usual last-minute flood of submissions. Following the same format from 2018, all entries were processed and posted online, ready for the public voting phase, which took place from 3-13 September.
The 2019 candidates
This year saw a diverse mix of entrants, many of whom are experienced in bikini and physique competitions, but the bulk of the entrants are ladies who simply live a fit and healthy lifestyle. Which makes it a particularly exciting year for us as it’s an indicator to how the industry is expanding in South Africa.
The online vote
In sticking with the same voting process from last year, online voting was open for all the contestants, not just the top 32, as was the case in previous years. This allows greater support from fans and gives our judges a good indication of what our audience values in a Face of Fitness candidate. See more below, our winner of the online vote automatically gets a top 12 entry!
The top 12 selection process
These deserving ladies have been selected using the same voting formula that we’ve applied in the competition since online voting was introduced 5 years ago.
The final score combines the popular public vote along with those from judging representatives from USN and fitness magazine. Each category has an equal weighting to determine the final outcome:
- 33% online voting
- 33% USN
- 33% fitness magazine
Online voting remains an important component of the selection process. It not only offers an indication of how much support and influence a contestant has in the industry, but it also demonstrates her ability to leverage her social media and online presence to canvass for votes.
However, deciding who will become a brand ambassador cannot only be based on a popularity vote, which is why USN and fitness magazine have equal input into the selection of the top 12.

The 3 finalists will be invited on an exclusive all-expenses paid photo shoot experience, which takes place from 3- 4 October in Johannesburg.
You’ll be able to follow all the action on the day of the shoot via our social media feeds to experience the event and get to know our 3 finalists.
Selecting a winner
Following the very popular format from 2018, all top 3 ladies will receive their own Fitness magazine cover. The eventual USN Face of Fitness 2019 winner will be selected based on the strength of her photos, and how well her values align to the brands she will represent. At this level, reader feedback also becomes vitally important in selecting our winner.
The popularity vote
A significant new change was implemented this year, a guaranteed spot for the winner of the public vote in the top 12. The contestant who amassed the most online votes was Fulufhelo Siphuma, who also receives a hamper from Fusion Labs in recognition for winning the public vote. It’s also important to note that from public’s top 12, four contestants will be making it throught to the top 12. (Fulufhelo Siphuma, Isjeanne du Toit, Kimberly Klopper and Paige Pestana)
