Shelby’s Face of Fitness Experience

Shelby considers the USN Face of Fitness cover model search as her ‘big break’ in the industry. After she appeared on the January 2017 cover of Fitness magazine and became a USN-sponsored athlete, Shelby gained the courage and confidence she needed to pursue her passion and build a career in the health and fitness industry.

She is currently working as a personal trainer while she completes her personal training and specialised nutrition qualifications. She also continues to appear on ads and other marketing platforms as a USN representative, all while chasing her ultimate goal of becoming an IFBB Pro Bikini athlete.

How did winning the cover model search change your life?

Since winning the title my life has changed for the better. If it wasn’t for the platform the competition creates, I wouldn’t be where I am today. All my success has followed my win and I’m now chasing my passion by studying personal training and specialised nutrition, which I don’t think I would’ve done without winning the competition.

What’s your best tip to anyone who wants to launch their fitness career?

As clichéd as it sounds, you must do something – only you can take that first step. It won’t just happen for you.

Why did you enter the USN Face of Fitness?

I really wanted to get involved in the industry and felt this was the ideal opportunity. Even if I didn’t win – and I honestly didn’t think I would – I knew it would help to open other doors and opportunities for me. So I basically entered to put myself out there and take a step towards achieving my goals and dreams.

What do you wish you knew before entering the competition?

I wish I knew that when you’re in the heat of the moment, because there is so much excitement and the shoot can get really hectic, that you need to pull yourself back into the present to acknowledge where you are and appreciate the enormity of this life-changing experience. This is important to make the most of the opportunity and realise how much it means in the context of your life.

What was the best advice someone gave you during the shoot?

We were reminded to be ourselves and try not impress people by putting on a show or not being genuine. And all the tips we got in terms of how to pose in front of the camera were also very helpful.

What did you learn from the Face of Fitness experience?

We were all there for the same reason, which was to compete for the win. But I realised that everyone needs support and that there is no need to be negative to the other contestants as we’re all trying to do our best. I therefore learnt that it’s always important to support your fellow athletes or competitors to inspire and motivate one another.

Tell us what it’s like to be part of Team USN.

To be part of Team USN is one of the greatest honours of my life. I’ve witnessed how much time, work and effort goes into that brand, which makes it more than just a label on a tub of protein for me – it’s a supportive team that feels like a family. Being part of the team has also given me amazing and unforgettable opportunities, like going to BodyPower in 2016.

What has been the best part of the Face of Fitness experience for you?

It would be difficult to single out just one aspect, but the people I’ve met and the things that I’ve learnt hold the greatest value for me.
